I’m a big fan of my AirPod Pros, and I wear them all the time, even though I could use the Bluetooth speaker in my office. But when I do, sometimes the volume is a tad quiet, so I wonder why my AirPod volume is so low. I’m fiddling with the volume control on the device I’m currently holding – with no noticeable change. So what is going on?
Certainly, there could be many reasons why the volume is so low, but the main culprit that I have found when I am in my home base area is as follows: When I’m by my home base area, I mean my house, my residence, the place where I work and live, that also means all my other devices are nearby—basically, my iPad Pro and my MacBook Pro. Everything is connected and when I switch from one thing to another, the handoff is often seamless. And sometimes, it’s less subtle or doesn’t happen, which can be the issue for the low volume.

Which device are the AirPods connect to?
The reason my AirPods’ volume is so low is that they are connected to one of those other devices. Even though the iPhone is in my pocket—so way closer—the audio is playing on the MacBook Pro or the iPad Pro and I’m listening through my AirPods. The easiest way to check? Let’s say I’m listening to Spotify; here’s how to check on volume issues:
- Open the Spotify app
- Look toward the bottom where it says, “Playing on…” AirPods, MacBook, iPad, etc.
Simply click there and start playing on the device near you if it’s not. Alternatively, you can keep fiddling with the volume on the nearby device, but it won’t do much to the volume in your ears. The other device is controlling the volume.
