Why I stopped eating meals at my desk

Eating meals at my desk was the status quo. And why not, I thought? I needed to eat, and I might as well keep working. But eating a meal is about so much more than stuffing my face with food. It’s about taking a moment away from working, being mindful, or sharing an experience with somebody else.

And then, I decided that I needed to change that eating and working routine. Certainly, I was getting back on the intentional mindfulness bandwagon. See my meditation article here. I bought a small kitchen table and two-chair set, and now I move over there when I need a break and some food. Looking out a different window is also nice and relaxing.

Specifically, here’s how my setup looks:

I’ve also added these fake plants to make it look even nicer.

But why did I eat meals at my desk previously? Easy answer when I reflect on it today:

It felt more productive – even when it wasn’t.

But stepping away from the daily grind for a few minutes brings some calm to my day. It actually re-energizes me. While I wasn’t efficient during those few minutes – it can make the next stretch of creative flow so much more productive. So, breaking the habit of eating meals at my desk seemed to be a good choice.
