When does it make sense to learn how to code?

Should I learn how to code as a content marketer? How about taking my kids to code camps or the like? What are the different levels of coding? Updating HTML: is that coding?

Felienne Hermans, Professor of Computer Science Education at Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, and I unpack that topic on Episode 683 of “The Business Storytelling Show.”

Among other things, we discuss:

  • What does it even entail when you learn how to code?
  • Is learning how to code hard?
  • Where can I learn?
  • How long does it take?
  • Is it a skill needed in my marketing career?

And more.

Personal reflection on how to learn to code

The biggest question for me remains which pieces of coding I need to learn. There are now so many “What you see is what you get” editors and apps out there that kind of keep their promise. But many of them still—at least for my brain—need a basic understanding of how things work, why one action does a certain thing, and what the developers were thinking.

So while the chances of me – as a content marketer to do a full-blown coding project are slim to none, a basic understanding is definitely beneficial. And then, when do people really need to dig deeper?
