One role in the influencer marketing world is that of the Amazon influencer. I added that hat to my ever-expanding hat collection of content outfits a few years ago, and it’s been rewarding on many fronts. But not everyone knows what it entails, and at times, people from other parts of my life say they saw me on Amazon. So, let’s answer the question: What is an Amazon influencer?

The role of an Amazon influencer

Amazon has recognized this trend and created the Amazon Influencer Program in 2017 – an offspring of the Amazon Affiliate Program. This program allows individuals with a strong online presence to partner with Amazon and earn commissions through affiliate links, product videosand livestreams.

An Amazon influencer usually has built an online following on one channel or another. They use their influence to promote Amazon products to their audience, providing honest reviews, recommendations, and engaging content. When viewers or readers buy, they earn a commission.

Becoming an Amazon influencer

To become an Amazon influencer, you must apply to the Amazon Influencer Program. Start by visiting Amazon’s Influencer Program signup page and providing your Amazon Associate account details or creating a new affiliate account.

You’ll be asked to answer questions about your brand, audience size, and content style. After agreeing to the Amazon Associates Operating Agreement and submitting additional information, such as a tax form, Amazon will review your application. If approved, you’ll be ready to start your journey as an Amazon influencer.

Earnings of Amazon influencers

Amazon influencers usually deploy a number of strategies. For example, I do the following:

  • Curate my storefront
  • Livestream
  • Product reviews
  • Affiliate links from my blog

Then, depending on what is being clicked on and bought, I earn a commission – usually below 8 percent. Though now, other Amazon programs momentarily offer up to 20 percent commission.

Commission payouts go up and down and depend on reach and where Amazon shows your content. In general, to succeed as an Amazon influencer, one must focus on sharing valuable product information. Consistently update your storefront with new products, go live, and keep recording those product videos.

To really throw my content a parade, I also now share versions of my content on YouTube, TikTok and other social media channels. This video of an oversized mouse pad started as a product review video and then also made it to my YouTube channel and other places where I share content.

Joining the program can help people with an online presence and build that community further. It also gives brands a chance to work with people. I get emails and messages all the time from brands that want to partner with me. So it can be a win-win, as long as the relationships gets build correctly.
