How to fix iPad/iPhone showing charging but battery percentage not increasing

I use my iPad Pro and iPhone all the time to produce content – especially livestreams. So when there’s a battery problem – or any problem – that can really bring things to a halt.

Problems can range from the battery draining in the middle of a livestream to the phone overheating and turning off, which happened to me in Las Vegas, to who knows what else. Well, the latest for me was that my iPad Pro’s battery was stuck at 53 percent while it was charging and I was monitoring my Amazon Live stream.

A lot of times I produce my livestreams from my iPad or iPhone so certainly them turning off during a show would be a problem.

Troubleshooting steps to fix a stuck battery

Background drainage from other apps

The first thing that came to my mind was that there were other apps running in the background. Not sure what those apps would be, but it’s easy enough to check and close them out.

  • Swipe up
  • Keep swiping on each app to close them

That however did not do the trick for me. The iPad was still stuck at 53 percent, where it has been for hours.

Restart to fix battery

Restarting your devices often does the trick for many things especially if restart is not done routinely. That would have been an easy solution, but the restart didn’t do the trick unfortunately.

Resetting settings

Maybe a reset of settings would fix it for me? To reset your settings go to:

General > Reset > Reset All Settings

This function keeps all your files, media, etc., on the device but resets settings. It takes a bit to restart but once the iPad did restart the problem was fixed. I had to change some of the settings back to my preferred settings but that wasn’t a big deal and mostly included:

  • Wallpaper
  • Keyboard click sounds to off
  • Sound notifications

It took a few minutes but the iPad was back to normal and the battery percentage started moving on up from 53 percent right away.

Is this a real problem?

The question that remained for me was whether or not this is actually a real problem. Let’s say my phone’s battery is stuck on 53 percent. Why does that matter as long as it keeps working? I suppose at some point it would run out of juice and then just turn off even if the display is stuck on 53.

So it’s probably a good idea to get this fixed as soon as possible. The last thing we’d want is for the phone or iPad to die while we are livestreaming, recording a podcast or are on an important meeting.
