To automate work is an interesting topic. Because if the powers that be find ways to automate work that you’re currently doing that can mean job losses. Or at least job changes. But if you find ways to automate work that should be automated to begin with it can help you advance in your career and find more time to do the things that actually need your brain power.

How I decide what to automate
There are some things that can easily be automated. And other things that probably shouldn’t be automated. For example, in the height of the work-from-home scenario during COVID, some people created videos of themselves to sit on Zoom calls. While that technically is somewhat creative, it also doesn’t help you participate in those meetings.
So, when I look at what tasks lend themselves, I think of tasks that help me move whatever I’m doing professionally forward. For example, my booking, reminder and follow-up process for my podcast is completely automated. That works. It’s literally the same process every time. And there’s no reason for me to manually trigger emails that could be sent automatically.
Aytekin discussed in the book how workflow and workflow reminders can also be automated. After somebody completes a step, somebody else gets an automatic notification that’s their turn to do something.
Overall, content and marketing teams need to implement automation into their processes. When done well, and thought through they can help us be more productive and drive more results. And most importantly, perhaps, focus our brain power on the most important tasks.
