Spotify vertical video is now a thing. Welcoming Spotify to the arms race when it comes to vertical short-form video. LinkedIn has added vertical video, and, of course, TikTok and Instagram have had them. Even Amazon product videos can be vertical too.
So here’s how they work on Spotify. These are short clips that podcasters can add to their video podcasts on Spotify. Presumably, they will be shown in high-traffic areas on Spotify and will make podcast discovery easier for listeners.
I love it, and I already create these videos anyway, so it’s really just another place to put them. So, let me show you my workflow.
Basic content requirements for these clips:
- Be a minimum of 15 seconds and maximum of 90 seconds
- Be at least 768 x 1024 pixels
- Be no bigger than 1GB
- Be an .MP4 or .MOV file
- Include audio
6 steps to create podcast clips on Spotify
Firstly, I grab either the video file from the episode or the YouTube link and head on over to Opus Clips. Opus Clips is an AI-powered platform that cuts up long-form video to shorter form clips – like the ones you can put on Spotify.
Once in Opus, go into clip and edit the text to get the content that you want. Other editing options are also available. I usually just stick with picking the right format and then edit the copy. Big fan of text-based video editing here!
I can even add other text that was said before and after and edit out words.
Creating clips from Restream (Alternate option)
Restream has rolled out automatic clips from livestreams as well. Once the stream is done, they automatically send these clips. If you don’t have a go-to yet for your podcast and livestream clips, this is now an option.
Uploading into Spotify
Save the video and download it. Once downloaded, go to your Spotify for Creators account and:
- Go to episodes
- Click on the three dots to the right of the episode
- Then upload a clip.
Here’s how that next screen looks:
And then here’s how the final upload looks:
The thing to remember is that this upload won’t work until AFTER the episode has been published. So, publish your episode, then head over to the EPISODE section, click on the dots and add your clip.
Definitely worth trying if you have a video podcast and/or live stream it.
As far as I can tell you can upload one clip for now.
The only place I’ve seen them so far is on the page for the episode as a small preview clip – location highlighted here:
