David Meerman Scott has been a thought leader in the marketing arena for years. He played an active role in the definition and development of “inbound marketing” and the launch of HubSpot, which, of course, many of us (me, too!) use for marketing.
Even world-renowned content marketer Jeff Bullas was influenced by David early in his content marketing journey. Jeff shared that story on this episode of “The Business Storytelling Show.”
At the right intervals, David Meerman Scott has published updated editions of “The New Rules of Marketing and PR.” The 9th edition dropped in 2024. In the book, he has discussed how public relations and marketing have changed and how they really aren’t disconnected – as they were in an offline world.
The 9th edition by David Meerman Scott
The 9th edition includes:
- Expanded content around AI, which certainly has hogged the headlines in 2023/24.
- Livestreaming and podcasting
- New stories
- Renaming of Twitter to X (but he continues to call posts tweets – I agree with that! Twitter posts sounds awkward.)
- And more…
He interviewed me for the section on livestreaming and podcasting and I’m so honored. I have long felt that livestreaming AND podcasting are a powerhouse strategy to:
- connect with industry leaders (I’ve interviewed Seth Godin, ya’ll!) and even potential customers.
- share human content on more channels. After all, people will hear and see you on your video podcast and live stream. Heck, you can now even use an eye-level camera to really look into people’s digital eyeballs.
- repurpose the content for short video clips and even longer blog posts, emails, and other social media posts.
- get your show on TV – when possible.
I really appreciate him including me in his international best-selling book. And there’s always something to learn. Here’s my initial biggest take-away from the 9th Edition:
Public relations and marketing really are not that far apart in a digital world. Offline – hello 1990s – sure I get it. But today, not so much.
I missed that little important fact in my ongoing effort to learn new things. That’s even though David joined me previously on “The Business Storytelling Show” for Episode 642 to discuss the 8th Edition of the book.
P.S.: I was first introduced to David by Kate Bradley Chernis, the CEO of Lately. Thanks, Kate.
