Here’s a fun story that happened to me while at the Adobe Summit North America 2017.
My wardrobe in general looks like this:
- In the office (nowhere near clients): Super casual. Think sweat-type pants.
- At conferences and on client visits: Super dressy. Think tie and suit. Sometimes – especially when speaking – I wear a vest like the one below.
And this is a picture of my outfit on Day 2 of the Summit in Las Vegas. And then this happened on my way to the conference: I was stopped in the casino area.
“Can you tell me where the ….. is?” a woman asked.
I looked at her baffled. Does she think I’m a local?
“Um. No idea,” I replied.
The man behind her looked at me in disbelief and grunted: “He said he doesn’t know. Ugh. WHAT?” Not helpful!
I didn’t get what the expectation of me knowing was and then immediately ended up being stuck behind a group of people all wearing vests. Of course, they were all casino employees and casino employees were vests. Mystery solved. ?? They thought I worked there. It was a like walking into a Best Buy in a blue polo and khakis.
Of course, the conference isn’t even that dressy dressy. Some wore ties but overall it’s business casual – which I don’t really have, other than me not wearing a jacket or losing the tie.
So what we wear matters. We are always judged by it and sometimes we are misidentified as a casino employee. I just hope they didn’t leave a negative Yelp review for the casino based on the exchange with me. ?
So there’s a fun little authentic story for you from the Adobe Summit. At least it gave people a little laugh.
